AtvCloner: When to use Large Drive Formatting

July 20th, 2010

Currently this is just a place holder until I get time to flesh it out.

With the introduction of AtvCloner 0.1.4b we can now try to bypass the

newfs_hfs: /dev/rdisk2s4: partition size not a multiple of 4K.

error followed by a failure to properly format the Media partition correctly.

Note that though this issue has seemed to appear only on the drives tested above 500GB, it is entirely possible that smaller drives could have this same issue. Since I was at a loss for what to call it I just used “Large Drive Formatting”.

However questions still remain such as:

What causes this?
How do I know if my drive has this problem?
Why not just use Large Drive Formatting for all drives by default ?

Below I will try to make clear exactly what is going on and what AtvCloner does to work around this issue.
